German Noch So: Scalar Degree Operator and Negative Polarity Item

چکیده

An approach pioneered by [1] relates polarity sensitivity to semantic triviality. [2], [3], and [4] let unlicensed negative polarity items (NPIs) yield contradictory presuppositions or implicatures. In these proposals, an NPI requires the asserted proposition to be stronger, or less likely, than certain alternative propositions. This requirement is designed to be satisfiable in licensing contexts only. The present paper describes a problem for applying such a contradiction based anlaysis to the German expression noch so, a polarity sensitive degree operator. It is first shown that under standard assumptions about gradable predicates and degree operators, a contradiction based account is straighforward to state. It merely requires a minor innovation concerning the nature of alternative propositions: where in previous work propositions are generated by alternative predicates or domains restrictions, noch so invokes propositions generated by alternative degrees. However, while such a contradiction based account helps derive polarity sensitivity of noch so, it is shown not to capture the contribution to meaning it makes in cases where it is licensed. An alternative analysis is presented, designed to capture this contribution. This analysis, however, does not without further assumptions derive polarity sensitivity. Ways of reconciling the requirements imposed by the distribution of noch so and its perceived contribution to meaning are discussed, although with no conclusive outcome.

A Multilingual Database of Polarity Items

This paper presents three electronic collections of polarity items: (i) negative polarity items in Romanian, (ii) negative polarity items in German, and (iii) positive polarity items in German. The presented collections are a part of a linguistic resource on lexical units with highly idiosyncratic occurrence patterns. The motivation for collecting and documenting polarity items was to provide a...

Modularity and Intuitions in Formal Semantics: the Case of Polarity Items∗

Linguists often sharply distinguish the different modules that support linguistics competence, e.g., syntax, semantics, pragmatics. However, recent work has identified phenomena in syntax (polarity sensitivity) and pragmatics (implicatures), which seem to rely on semantic properties (monotonicity). We propose to investigate these phenomena and their connections as a window into the modularity o...

Pattern-Based Extraction of Negative Polarity Items from Dependency-Parsed Text

We describe a new method for extracting Negative Polarity Item candidates (NPI candidates) from dependency-parsed German text corpora. Semi-automatic extraction of NPIs is a challenging task since NPIs do not have uniform categorical or other syntactic properties that could be used for detecting them; they occur as single words or as multi-word expressions of almost any syntactic category. Thei...

Minimizers, Maximizers and the Rhetoric of Scalar Reasoning

This paper addresses two basic questions about polarity items: what sorts of meaning can such forms encode and why should such forms exist in the first place. My starting point is the Scalar Model of Polarity (Israel 1996, 1998), which predicts a reliable correlation between a polarity item’s sensitivity and its scalar semantic properties: specifically, it predicts that forms denoting a minimal...

Tag Questions in Early and Late Modern English: Historical Description and Theoretical Implications

Tag questions are a conspicuous feature of spoken Present-day English. In contrast to many other languages, where tags are generally realized by invariant forms (e.g. nicht wahr? in German, oder? in Swiss German, or n’est-ce pas? in French), the canonical English question tag is a reduced interrogative clause whose structure and lexical content is conditioned by the format of the anchor – or ho...
